» Irene Taylor - Great blog!

Hi Greg,

I really enjoyed your How to Make a Sandwich blog! Having real-world topics to write about is very important to kids and makes their writing fun and meaningful as well.

I used a similar idea in my classroom for years - the goal was expository writing, but the topic was How to Make a PB&J Sandwich. After the kids had brainstormed and written directions, I followed their directions exactly as written - to the delight and dismay of many.

When the direction said "put the jelly on the bread" I did just that - put the jar of jelly on the loaf of bread. Same thing when they said "spread the peanut butter" - if they didn't specify using a knife, I used my fingers (yuck!).

The need for clear and easily followed directions hit home after one of these demonstrations for sure!

Here's more about that activity and a few other writing ideas as well: http://www.suite101.com/lesson.cfm/17372...

Thanks for a great blog!

Irene

Hi Irene,

Thanks. It is a topic the kids enjoyed. And that's half the battle...
