Children with special needs can benefit greatly from summer camp and enrichment activities highlighting their interests and strengths.

A variety of summer camps and enrichment programs can be found close by to meet the interests and requirements of a child with special needs. Educational and/or recreational programs offering typical summer camp fun are possible, and can provide a unique combination of therapy, education, and confidence building for children who may otherwise be isolated or unable to enjoy the many opportunities and aspects of summer.

Summer Camps for Kids with Disabilities

Many summer camps specifically designed for children with physical disabilities exist and provide caregivers with an alternative to constant home care. Facilities at these camps are adapted for wheelchairs, with paved walkways and accessible bathrooms and also employ highly skilled camp staff. Activities such as gardening, nature exploration, arts and crafts, tent camping, physical recreation, and possibly even field trips can all be a part of the day for special campers.

For a wonderful example of a summer camp devoted to people with special needs, visit Camp Allen. This camp is located in Southern New Hampshire and offers both one-week and three-week sessions for campers of all ages. Each camper will be given the exciting prospect of forming friendships and building new skills.

Music Therapy for Children With Special Needs

The therapeutic power that music holds for children with special needs is well known. Many music schools will offer programs specifically designed for the disabled. Children with autism and nonverbal children can benefit from learning to play an instrument and may find a better way of expressing their feelings. Music therapy can also help children socialize, learn how to take turns, and follow directions. Search for “music therapy” online to find programs nearby.

Therapeutic Horses and Horseback Riding

A unique and wonderful summer camp option for a kid with special needs that loves animals may be horseback riding. Both mounted and un-mounted equine programs are beneficial, providing a chance for physical and emotional development of children with various challenges. Whether a child is able to actually ride on a horse or simply enjoys interacting with these phenomenally social creatures, equine summer classes for special needs children will be a great experience.

There are countless horseback riding programs for special needs available. Try visiting the special needs horseback riding program at Lovelane to find out more about horseback riding therapy for children who are at risk or have disabilities.

Summer can often be lonely for kids with special needs. Allow children to enjoy these months in a supportive learning environment that highlights their abilities, not their disabilities. Whether they like the arts, summertime sports, or animals, programs can be found to enhance these interests. Enroll a child with special needs in a summer camp that fits his interests and talents and provide him with a fulfilling experience that will challenge, encourage, and engage him.
